When you come to our practice, you become part of our family. We don't just care about your hearing, we care about you. Your hearing affects every part of your life, and we want to help you stay connected to everything you love. That's why we do what we do. And it's why we are so committed to finding affordable solutions for all of our patients. We are an independent practice, which allows us to recommend hearing aids from all major manufacturers — so you can relax knowing that our priority is our patients, not selling a particular kind of hearing aid.
Hemphill Hearing Center has been serving East Texas and West Louisiana's hearing healthcare needs since 1998. We're proud to say that many of our patients drive a distance to come see us because they trust us and are satisfied with how we treat them. Our patients are not just customers, and we take as much time as we need to listen to and respond to our patients' concerns.
Hemphill Hearing Center was originally founded by Susan Cowgill, who built a reputation of respect and high-quality service for years. Now that tradition is carried on by Dr. Karen Mills, who is honored to be entrusted with the care of Susan Cowgill's patients.
Dr. Karen Mills was born and raised in Groves, Texas, just two hours from Hemphill. Her interest in helping those with hearing loss began at an early age when she befriended childhood neighbors who were profoundly deaf. She initially went to school intending to go into deaf education, but she found that audiology was a better fit for her. She graduated from Lamar University with a bachelor's degree in Communication Disorders in 1983 and her master's in Audiology in 1987. She obtained her Doctor of Audiology degree from A.T. Still University in 2004. After she got her master's, she worked at private ear-nose-throat clinics and hospital clinics before getting to know the founders of Hemphill Hearing Center and eventually taking over their practice when they chose to retire.
Dr. Mills is proud to be a member actively involved in the Hemphill community. She serves as vice president of the Sabine County Chamber of Commerce, she is on the Board for the Great East Texas Outdoor Fest, and she participates in the Sabine County Economic Development Advisory Counsel. She is also an active member of the Hemphill Lion's Club. Dr. Mills comes from a military family (her father was in the army and her grandfather was in the navy), and she's very proud to be part of the Veterans' Choice program and provide hearing services to veterans around the area.
